Frequently asked questions:
Male or female: I grew up with female dogs and never having a male, I always gravitated to the females. My first BC's were females: Panda and Peppy La Pu. Great dogs and Panda is foundation to many of my girls. Since I have started breeding dogs, thus I purchased my first male dog. I found that I LOVE the males. They are so willing to please, obedient and are everyone's buddies. Now, I love my females too but the females can have a stubborn streak in them where the males are willing partners in everything. Both sexes are wonderful though. I will always have both.
Are Border Collies crazy?? Some lines are nuts. Our dogs are selected for a level headed dispostion. They are active dogs but not hyper active. We have had the opportunity to experience several dogs not from our lines and must say that Bell's name was changed to "Psycho Bell" because of her need to constantly bark and chase Sparrows in the trees. Shadow's name was changed to "Shadow Seeker" from her need to chase shadows, bite raindrops, and constantly staying in motion, barking and hyper activity. I live on an acreage and our dogs have many acres to run on all day. These two dogs and the other "nuts" that were given to us never settled down and even with a full day of exercise. Even farmers don't want a hyper active dog. They are difficult to train and are erratic in their behavior. So, yes, some BC's are crazy but with careful selection you can get dogs with top notch dispositions for home and competition. Really!
How to pick a puppy? Find a breeder that you feel comfortable with. If you have a color or sex preference then you are a bit more limited and you will have to go with what is available. It is best to meet the parents so you can see what their disposition is like. If this is not possible, trust the breeder and make sure you ask questions about health, disposition, activity level of the parents and what is available.
