Subject: Smudge Report
I was always afraid to buy a Border Collie in case I got one of those
high
strung, crazy dogs. With just talking to Quantum Leap over the
internet, I
bought Smudge. I have never been disappointed!
Smudge is the perfect dog, as far as I'm concerned. I have trained him
to
run in Flyball and he has never disappointed me. He keeps his head
about
him, but turns on the speed when he needs it. He is quiet around the
house
and in the van. He always comes when he's called and I can always rely
on
him. He is a thinking dog, not like a lot of the Border Collies that I
have
seen. He doesn't just fixate on something and ignore everything else.
He
always hears me and responds. That makes a big difference in flyball.
He
isn't using up all his energy barking and freaking out. When he ran his
first tournaments, I didn't have enough handlers for my dogs. He was
the
most reliable dog for me to give to someone else to run. My Aussie was
too
nervous and crazy and wouldn't run for anyone else. Everyone who got to
run
him in a tournament, always wanted to keep him as there own. That's a
big
compliment when you have a Border Collie that stands out. No one can
believe
that I bought him over the internet, without even seeing him.
I'm sure he could do a lot more dog sports, if I had time to train him.
I
have had him on agility equipment and he did great. He is a very easy
dog to
train. You never need to be hard on him. I use a no if he does it wrong
and
yes when he's right. Once he understands what it is that you want, he
does
it right from then on. He very seldom makes a mistake. We are starting
his
second season of flyball tournaments, this coming weekend! I'm really
excited, because I get to run him myself this year!!!!! I've always
wanted
to run a fast, consistent dog and Smudge is that dog.
Just tell Kari what you are looking for in a dog. She will be able to
figure
out if she has a dog that suits your needs. Not all dogs are good for
all
people and the breeder can usually match up personalities. I wanted a
dog
with an off switch. I didn't want any obsessive compulsive behaviour. I
needed a dog that could think and would be fast. I didn't want a heavy
coat
or too large a dog. These are things that I asked for and I got what I
wanted. I think she did a great job matching me up with Smudge.
I currently have twelve dogs that I have trained for flyball, agility,
frisbee, obedience, freestyle dance and demonstrations. I have been
training
dogs for 33 years and have gone through many of the different styles of
training. I have trained good dogs, bad dogs and a few great dogs. I
would
say that Smudge is one of the great dogs. I would buy another border
collie
from Kari any time, if I didn't have twelve dogs! I think my house is
full!
If you need to talk more, email me again. Good Luck!

Hi
I haven't been in touch for a long time. I thought you would like to know how Smudge is doing. He has grown up to be one of the nicest Border Collies I know. He is gentle, kind and sweet. He isn't crazy like a lot of the Border Collies up here (Ontario, Canada) and is a joy to live with.
I have been training him for flyball for a year now and he is finally ready. We have in House League right now. This is where you can run your dog in races but it isn't really a tournament. He is totally focused and rarely makes a mistake. He has the most incredible box, the way he turns on it and comes off it. That is one of the hardest things to teach a flyball dog. Out of all the Border Collies puppies myself and my team members bought last year, he is the only one totally ready to do tournaments. He had a set back when he was a puppy, I can't remember how old. He was out for a run in the bush, with myself and the other dogs, and somehow cut his front right leg badly. I rushed him to the vet and had it stitched, but he lost lot of time training, until it had healed. Still with this set back he is still the most advanced of all the puppies. I found that as soon as he knows what you want of him, he does it. He is soft and you don't have to get mad at him if he does it wrong. You just have to tell him wrong and then show him the right way and off he goes and never forgets.
I have a friend that does Border Collie Rescue up here and she can't believe how lucky I am to have such a great Border Collie, and I bought him off the internet. People who don't really like Border Collies always comment that they could live with Smudge. That says a lot for your breeding programme and your dogs. I always tell everyone where I got him. I am glad that I took that chance. If I ever got another one I would get it from you.
I have a little Chinese Crested and a small Poodle rescue living here right now. Smudge was the first dog they both played with. He would lie on his back and they would jump all over his head and he would play mouth games with him. I trust him with any puppy and all dogs. When friends bring their dogs to visit, it is Smudge that tries to make them feel at home and tries to get them to play. He can get the worst dogs to play with him. He doesn't knock them down or bowl them over. He just plays with them and gets them to chase him. He loves to have other dogs to chase him.
I'm hoping that he will run in real tournaments this coming spring. I'm not sure which team he will run on because it is hard to have enough room for all the dogs on one team. I am trying to figure it out now. I want him to run full time and with a good group of dogs.
I will let you know when he starts his career in flyball.
Thanks

Hi Kari,
I took Chase to the vet yesterday and she passed her puppy visit with flying colors. The vet complimented her breeder. She herds me everywhere I go and helps me put the chickens up at night. She is in the middle of everything and bosses the older dogs around. She is one tough customer and should make a great goose dog. I am also training her for flyball and conformation just in case. (-; She and I have an incredible bond already and she just sort of tolerates or avoids everyone else she meets.
Take care,
Sheila

Subject: Re: Twister
Hi Kari- thanks for the message. I'll try to get some pics. of the boy's to you soon, I don't have any right now. Twister is becoming an awesome agility dog and has many admirers at class. He's so calm and fast, not crazy fast like some of the BC's you see. He can keep his mind and wits about him and make good time doing it. He's very responsive. I haven't trialed him yet but he's pretty much ready,..... he's such a nice dog to live with and always ready to train and have fun.
Thanks-Shellie
Greetings from California. This puppy is Lucy and is a Peppermint Patty x Rocket puppy. As you can see Lucy is a big part of their family!
Hi Kari:
1. RE: Lucy
She is the most amazing dog. At eight months, she is totally trained. She walks with us without a leash, sits, lays down, and rolls over on command. She catches a frisbee in the air and chases tennis balls for as long as you want to throw them to her. She is an amazingly fast runner. She is a good soccer player too! I bought several agility products for her to jump over and through and she jumps at the highest levels. Her athletic skills are a constant source of enjoyment for all of us.
I also try to keep her mind active. I will take a plastic bottle and put some cheerios or raw almonds in it, screw on the top and give it to her. She can now open the bottle in less then five minutes. She learned how to unscrew the top and then how to hold the bottle between her paws, roll onto her back and tip the bottle up to empty out the contents. Or she will bat it around the floor until she gets the treats out.
She is such a beautiful dog too. Her coloring, long legs, shiny coat, and beautiful expressive brown eyes endure her to all that see her. She is so friendly and loving to all people she encounters and also gets along well with other dogs, if they are not aggressive to her. The other day she encountered a shaggy terrior, and chased it around in circles. I think she thought it was a sheep.
As for her personality, she is so loving. She loves to sit right next to us on the couch or on our beds. She will put her head in our laps or on our shoulders and fall asleep. She is very playful. She uses her paws like a kitten and will bat at you until you play with her. She will get her toys and come up behind you and push into your legs to let you know she wants some attention.
She also understands much of what we say to her. If I ask her 'where' a certain toy is, 50% of the time she gets the toy I mention, but she always gets a toy. If I tell her to go wake up my son in the morning, she runs upstairs and jumps on his bed and licks his face. She knows who 'Daddy' is. She understands 'walk'. The other night we were waiting for my son and my husband to come home. I fell asleep on the couch. Lucy heard the garage door go up and she came over and licked my face and nudged me to wake me up. She wanted me to know that they were home.
We all just love her so much. We feel very lucky that we were able to get a dog that is so smart, loving, sweet, and fun.
The last picture was taken right after we received her. The rest are more recent.
Well I guess that is it. I don't have too many pictures of her right now. We have had a long rainy season. Once the weather is nicer, I will be able to take more pictures. I'll send you more than.
2. I keep in touch with Gina. She is the one that received her puppy the same day we did. However, her puppy, I believe, was from a different litter. She has sent me pictures of her puppy and she really looks different from Lucy.
Shelly
Kari,
Attached are some really good pictures of Nemo, son of cho. When I first
heard about Border Collies I wanted no part of owning one. My boyfriend
Todd would consider no other breed, much to my chagrin. Finally, I gave in
and we got Nemo. I read many books to get ready to own what I thought would
be a challenging and frustrating dog. My biggest fear was that he wouldn't
stay busy enough and go crazy. After all, that is what some books say about
Border Collies. Nemo is the best dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
His disposition is wonderful and he is very eager to please. He always
listens and he never went through that "rebellious" stage that the trainers
said was definitely coming. He continues to surprise and amaze me. He
makes a fantastic companion and I couldn't imagine my life without him. I
am writing this in hopes of alleviating fear in others who are thinking of
purchasing a Border Collie from you. As I'm sure that you can tell, I
adore my dog, and feel very blessed to have him in my life. If anyone
should ever have any questions about owning a Border Collie that you bred,
please have them e-mail me.
Thank you for the great breeding!

Hi,
We just wanted to let you know how the puppies we bought from you last fall are doing. Meg, the black and white female (Emily was her mother) went to her first show this past week. She competed in the 4-H show at the Alaska State Fair where she won 1st place in Jr. Showmanship and placed 3rd in the Jr. Obedience. The agility course was also opened for the young dogs who may try agility this fall. Meg did great and was doing the whole course off leash after just a few minutes. She did very well and was so relaxed and mellow about everything, you would have thought she went to dog shows every week.
Captain, the blue merle male (Peeka and Blue) did not compete this year. Although his obedience is better then Meg's and he is much smarter (he learns anything you want to teach him in just a few sessions), Zach has not worked with him enough (He get's worked mainly by my husband or I) to be able to show. Obedience is too slow for Zach but they will start in the agility classes this fall and compete in that next year. Meanwhile, Captain is a star tennis ball and Frisbee dog and will play as long as your arm holds up to throwing for him.
They are both well loved and very sweet dogs and we are very pleased with both.
Sincerely,
Beth Cherry
Kari,
Wanted to let you know that Captain and Meg have settled into life at home and are doing very well. We sent in their AKC registration papers this week (Quantum Leap's Captain Cook and Quantum Leap Meg's Ms-tic Oreo) and also had them microchipped today when they went to the vet's for their next set of shots. Megan was very good about her shots. Captain screamed bloody murder and fought like a demon. (This is his standard reaction to anything unpleasent: baths, having his ears cleaned out or being put in the kennel at bedtime)
Meg will begin 4-H with Lexi and Captain will start Puppy Kindergarten Classes in October (they can't participate in either program until they finish their puppy shots in another four weeks). I have also got Captain and I set up to begin herding lessons in the spring (he will start lessons at 6 monthes)
We are constantly amazed at the extreme difference in personality Meg is such a snuggly sweetheart and will sit beside Lexi and chew her toys for as long as Lexi wants her to. Captain wants to explore everything all at once, and does so with great exuberence. Very much like my son; they are two of a kind. Like my son, he also seems to have a great affinty for mud. I allowed the puppies to accompany us last week in the garden while we dug the potatoes. Meg walked around the garden checking things out while Captain helped us by digging furiously in the muddy potato patch. He didn't know why we were digging but threw himself whole heartedly into helping us. What a mess! We are having a new garage built beside our house and the builders have made a very muddy mess digging the foundation. When ever Captain and Zach go out together, they both come back covered in mud. Needless to say, they are both getting alot of baths.
Needless to say we are all thrilled with the puppies
Beth
Kari,
He is doing great! He is basically potty trained already. Amazingly, he
wakes us up in the middle of the night to take him outside. Last night he made
it all the way through the night. He has only had two accidents. He gets
very playful every time he wakes up. But when he is ready to take a
nap...he's like a ton of bricks. You can move him around and he won't even open an
eye.
He is learning the word "no" (of course) and he knows his name for the most
part. Everyone thinks he's just the cutest...and he is!
I got him a collar today and it doesn't even phase him. I'm going to work
on leash training a little bit this week so he can start getting used to it.
He's great with other dogs. Completely fearless! He has been around an
American Stafordshire, a Rott, 2 Boxers and 2 Greyhounds and of course he's with
my Chocolate Lab everyday. Sometimes my old dog just can't take that puppy
energy and Enzo just doesn't seem to understand. He's also making an
acquaintance with my cat. The cat found a new play friend. They wrestle around and
chase each other. It's very cute. He is a very good dog. I will send
pictures to you soon and send more updates as he learns more tricks and keeps
growing!
Thanks again...I couldn't have asked for a better puppy!
Colleen
Sorry it took so long for Mom and I to get pictures to you. Here are
pictures of the girls from Christmas, Rane from Halloween and Rane and Brian bonding
on the couch. So as you can tell both Rane and Ellie are doing great. They
both have winter "horse" blankets that they get to wear. Rane is just the best
dog ever and we couldn't have asked for a better dog. I just graduated from
nursing school so now I have time to get Rane into school. I would like to
introduce her into either agility or Frisbee. I know she would do great in
either. Do you have any suggestions to were I could start? I always love
checking out your website and checking out all the great BC pictures. Have a great
day.

Hi Kari,
School's out!! Mac's pretty happy about that and I'd have to say that I
am as well, lol.
Anyway...alll is great with my teething puppy. He has an appointment to
be fixed, ouch, in three weeks. I pity the poor wee fellow. His training is
still unbelievable! He's so smart. I guess you probably hear that a lot,
but I'm just so impressed. I'll have to send you a video sometime. We have him
doing the funniest tricks! His favorite is, "bounce". All he does is bounce
up and down in one spot, looking a lot like Tigger, and then dive into the
next trick when we say to. He loves "Roll over" as well. It took him awhile to
retain that one, so I think he's just proud of himself for remembering.
We're trying to work on him with people. That's our biggest plight at
present. He loves people....but I can't seem to keep him from jumping on them,
he just gets too excited!
Anyway...nothing bad to report, this time, I'm pleased to say. He's
snoozing at my feet this very minute and being the sweetie that he tends to be.
He's also teething, though...so he tends to get really worked up every now and
then.
How are all the other puppies doing from those two litters?? I'd love
to see pictures. Did you post any? I'll have to check.
I thought I'd send a couple more pics of Mac. He's really a gorgeous
wee thing, but quite a bit bigger. Sorry if they take a bit to download. My
new camera is a bit of a pain, time wise, but the pictures are great.
Thanks for your time,
Lorna and Mac
P.S I was right about his eyes. They were both changing, but neither
changes completely, so he now has a 1/2 blue eye with Brown and a 3/4 Brown eye with
Blue. It's pretty unique looking as depending on the picture you take, you
could get all blue, all brown, or his true mixed. You can see some of the
differences in a couple of these pictures due to the indoor/outdoor lighting.
Sometimes...they even appear Green!
He also has a floppy right ear that I'm sure you'll notice in the
photos...it does go up, but only sometimes! He's just too precious!
he's here. he's beautiful and we are just in love with him. i've been walking him around on a leash for about an hour and he did really well. again, we love him. Kari, it is so nice to be able to deal with someone I didn't even know and things work out so well. thanks again and i'll be in touch. Kathy

Kari... here is a picture of a pretty happy Border Collie pup! Think we have settled on Merlin as his name... and he is adjusting just wonderfully. All the dogs have worked out their roles with out much more than a body check and curled lip (sigh of relief). Merlin has a strong will and is steady and brave about most new encounters (including a high energied five year old grandson, the Alpha GSD, a trip to the vet, California lizards, the swimming pool, the surely old tom cat, and dark nights sleeping under the bed... no crying!!) He is a cheerful fellow who is either napping or playing with his toys and loves to go with us on short hikes around the acre or what ever chores we are up to in the yard. He LOVES wet green grass to roll in and anything wet and cool! Cant wait to get him a wading pool! I have been very impressed with his potty training aptitude (only one small accident in three days) and he communicates his need to go out pretty clearly for such a youngster... am sure it helps to have older dogs to model, but I tell you after potty training a boston terrier which took MONTHS, Merlin is a pleasant change. We had out Vet check today... everything a go at 8.1 lbs. I am truely enjoying the puppy and learning all about him. He is sooo handsome.. this morning his ears were semi-pricked!! Bet you are enjoying the absence of puppies for a few days before the next litter! Thanks, Lysa everything worked out wonderfully!

About her dog Judge. Judge is a Daisy x Gunner pup.
His first Nadac show
In the Proficient category, so he was doing all the distance
challenges.
Q in Novice regular course time 43.2 seconds Judges time 25.72
seconds
Q in Novice regular Course time 46.2 seconds Judges time 26.5 seconds
Q in Novice Tunnelers Course time 36.5 seconds Judges time 18.51
seconds.
He was really moving. We only showed one day so his Q rate was
excellent for a young dog.
I was really pleased with his performance.
on the 18.51 run he misjudged a tunnel and actually came to a stop and
reaccelerate and still had a 18.51. Neeko was at the show too and he
had on the same run same course a 16.85.
Neeko has never lost on a clean run. Judge was running about 7.5 yards per second.

Well, Enzo just turned one on the 31st. It's amazing how time flies. He is doing great! We started flyball 2 weeks ago and he is catching on very fast. He is still the smartest dog around and of course he is beautiful. On the 16th of Jan. we adopted a Border Collie/Aussie mix named Violet. They just love eachother. We all go on 3 mile jogs regularly and they love it. Enzo is a great dog. Everyone that meets him says how well mannered he is and how pretty he is. We couldn't have asked for a better Border Collie. I will attach pics of the dogs.
Thanks,

Hi Kari -
We love our dog - and its only been the first day! We decided on a name, he will be called Tavern. He was a doll for the car ride home and met a new friend when we stopped at a friends house and let him out - did his business outside. He was not dominant, but really took to running around when he had the chance.
Today was actually filled with a lot of sniffing around the yard and sporadic naps. For about 1.5 hours he snuggled with me on the couch and was just perfect! We played a little bit and tonight we can tell he is becoming a little more outgoing - he actually listens and watches TV - there was an agility dog competition on and he really perked up - good sign! He has done his business a couple times outside and whimpers when he needs to go out. Only one accident and that was because he is a little confused about the collar and I gave him a quick bath. His coat is beautiful!
We'll see what tonight and tomorrow brings and keep you updated. Our first vet appointment is on Wednesday!
Thanks again, he is a sweetheart!
By the way - he can spend awhile just chewing on puppy bones. Nice for us and keeps him occupied!

Hi Kari,
Just wanted to give you the run down on the pickup & etc:
Everything went very smoothly ... we, very luckily, had a really nice
woman at the NWA cargo office who actually called to tell me when
Triton was there -- I was still on the train! Got him out, walked him
around, and gave him love and treats right away. He was great getting
home -- never a peep!
Since then, he's been amazing. He truly is a sweet boy, and
incredibly cute. It's a big trasition for him, but he's being a real
trooper -- we were chasing around the park all afternoon yesterday and
today I had him walking around the neighborhood to meet my friends.
We've only had about 4 accidents since Friday, and he's beginning to
sit at my command and wait at every intersection. A very smart boy!
Thanks so much -- I'm thrilled, and Triton seems very, very happy in
his new home.
All the best,

What a wonderful little spirit
He got his first bath last week ( was not real happy about it ) and now he is so beautiful and fluffy and white
Spring has really sprung here in NY and he is loving his life on our farm, with the horses, and our long walks in the woods
And down to the river. He gets his feet wet but has not yet “ took the plunge ! “
I have been training him to my voice, so I have not yet had a collar or leash on him !
He is very smart and willing

Hope all is well with you Kari
Thank you again
A very happy Cathy

Hi, we want to tell you about our Quantum Leap puppy, Daisy. Daisy was from your 02 July 2005 litter. Daisy has become a true member of our home. We couldn’t be happier with our little girl.
Saying she is smart doesn’t seem to cover it so here is a list of some things she has done to date.
At 10 weeks old she was sitting, laying down and staying on command (usually the first command)
At 4 months old she would sit at the door and wait to go out when she needed to go potty.
At 7 months old she could be trusted to stay in the house out of her kennel for hours without chewing or having an accident.
As of now (age 9months) she obeys the following commands. Sit, down, stay, wait, Kennel, go potty (she even fakes it when she doesn’t have to go!) Give, drop it, out, and come. All commands are obeyed 95% of the time on the first time given. Daisy now whines or barks at the door to go outside.
Daisy has the perfect temperament for our family. She will play catch or fetch at any time day or night. However she isn’t hyper and when the family is relaxing she will be more than happy to chew on one of her many rawhides or just hang out with us.
Daisy has started obedience class with the Spokane dog-training club. We would like to train her for agility and maybe fly ball after she completes her obedience classes
I have heard of the crazy tendencies of Border Collies however we don’t see those in Daisy. She is a wonderful family pet.
Thank you
Allen

Hi Kari:

Subject: IndY
Indy is a Gunner/Daisy puppy from April 7, 2005. I have enclosed a current picture of him. Everyone that knows Gunner says he looks just like him. He is a big boy! – Look at the size of those feet. He is still working to learn flyball. He has the jumps down but still needs to work on his box turn.
This weekend a newly formed team came up from Rochester and I got to meet his ¾ brother. His name is Judge. He is from Gunner and Daisy’s sister and is almost 2.
I took Indy along with me on one of my therapy visits with the sheltie and he was awesome. He is so well behaved for a puppy/young dog. He just laid there at my feet. I think he will make an excellent therapy dog. I have never had a dog that could be so active outside and mellow inside.
